Drawing
My Definition of Drawing
My perception of drawing is using a medium to create an image incorporating line, tone form and/ or texture. It can be created on any surface, and with any material providing an image is notable in the end product. A drawing is an image produced onto a surface of some kind with a material that can create a line or image.
Artists Drawings
This particular piece by Morgan Shooter was created sometime between 1900 - 1950 with no full indication of when. Created with pencil, Shooter sketched quickly but with an adequate amount of detail to create a realism within the drawing. Though the image is a pretty piece, and there is composition giving dimension to the room, I find the image quite flat with no sense of purpose or reason to look at it for a prolonged time. Despite the notation of shadow and detail in the furniture, I don't find the particular piece striking, nor do I find that Shooter really embellished the true beauty of the objects in the room they were drawing.

Pencil Drawing on Paper

Created in 1972, Lazzara created this piece using charcoal on paper scaling at 91.4 x 61cm. Rather than sketching out a realistic look of the room he was in, he created chaotic lines with speed to really embody the atmosphere in the room. When initially glancing at the piece, I struggled to see what the image was about. However, once I looked more willingly at the image I could see what was happening in the image and what Lazzara was capturing. I love the abstract technique he uses and how his use of pressure with the charcoal creates a beautiful shade and dimension. Another thing that I enjoy about this drawing is that Lazzara didn't need to put a lot of detail into each object/ person in the room for you to see exactly where everything is and type of atmosphere he was trying to capture.

Damian Goiidich
This particular drawing by Damian Goidich was created in 2016 with charcoal, a material he particularly enjoys using due to its versatility and ease for use. What I like about Goidich's work, is the creates this rough, manic ambiance and texture in the way he creates the shadows and forms of his figures. I find his work a great influence to me, as the techniques and structure he uses are the aspirations I want to have as an artist.

Room
For my first drawing project, I was to create an image of a room using A3 paper. I had to consider and interpret all angles and perceptions of the room, including the ceiling and floor.
Check out my sketchbook for practice drawings for my final pieces
For the room I chose, I was not actually in it at the time of drawing, but purely recited from memory as a lot of my time in the past resided there. I chose this room as it has a close connection to myself, and felt it expressed my personality and relationship to life well. A like a lot of my work, I use references from personal experiences or emotions as I feel it is important for the audience to know the artist and express any vulnerability I possess. The final image is of a lap dancing bar I previously worked in for several years. I managed to successfully perceive all angles of the main bar area, including the back wall, shown in the reflection of the mirrors on the stage.

Unusual Objects
For the second drawing project of the semester, I was to create a series of four images on A3 paper of unusual objects using unusual materials. Since we were restricted from using things such as pencils for most of the image, I brainstormed ideas for what materials would be best for the paper, as well as the materials having a connection to the object I would draw. Some ideas were obvious such as using coffee or tea, but I wanted my work to be more experimental and unique. The tools I used for my drawings were shoe polish, fake tan, honey and cigarette ash. I initially sketched out the images with pencil, to ensure the image was adequate to my style and taste, then erased the pencil lines as I drew along with each medium.

Stand for Something, Black Shoe Polish on A3 Cardboard
My first image, is of a pair of Dr Marten boots, created with black shoe polish on A3 sized cardboard, imitating a shoe box. I found the shoe polish very easy to work with and showed perfectly, similar to a paint or ink. I used a pair of Dr Marten boots as I previously worked for said company and love the shoes incredibly for their comfort and durability. Though not my favourite of the for images, I do like how the image turned out.

I Am An Object? Fake Tan on A3 Paper
This image I drew the form of a body using fake tan on A3 paper. The tan was quite thin initially, but once I left the tan to settle in the air for a while and dampened the tool I used, it became a lot easier to work with. I think the image came out beautifully and is my favourite of the four.

Breathe In, Cigarette Ash on A3 Paper
For this image, the ash was very light to work with, and several layers had to be applied to show any differentiation between shades and forms. I was difficult to work with and I am not 100% happy with the final image, however, I do see a movement in the drawing unlike my others. This was also drawn on A3 paper.

Beauty Maker
Even though I loved the outcome of my image made from fake tan, I didn’t believe it was 100% fitting for the project. Using the same materials, I created this image. I also added eyeshadow to provide depth and shade in the image.

Runny Honey, Honey and Chalk Pastel on A3 Paper
My final image, of a bee working in a beehive was in the forefront of my mind as soon as this task was initiated to me. I did however find the honey the worst medium to work with and had to mix some pigment into it to bring out the yellow more. I also added pigment to create the black of the bee as I wanted the entire image to be created with honey. This image was created on A3 paper.
Close-Up Image
When creating my close-up images, initially I had some difficulty finding an object that worked well to provide a realistic look to it, showing the textures and lighting well. When sketching out ideas, I produced several images of cans of pop, a Lego sculpture of The Beatles Yellow Submarine and a brown leather bag. Although the bag image was the most detailed, I found it far too time consuming to produce multiple images of in the time frame I had to create them. This lead me to using an album record as my muse. I found the album record a good object to use as its grooves of each song combined with the way the lighting hits the object an interesting piece. Within my drawings, I wanted to release the music held within the record. Since this particular album was from the 1960's, I wanted to express the psychedelic vibes and translate the colourfulness' of "flower power".
For this particular segment of my drawing project, I was to produce three drawings on A3 paper, one in grey scale, one in colour and a digital image version.

For this particular piece, I created a Katana Sword from cigarette cartons. The purpose of this piece is to create a three dimensional drawing of an object. I used a Katana Sword for reference and created it roughly to scale with the blade reaching to 90cm long. I used cigarette boxes as my material as both these things are a symbol of impending death. Though this piece is incredibly fragile and not quite as structured as I would've hoped, I am pleased with the overall outcome using the materials I had and the vision I had in mind.

Continuous Line Drawing
For this drawing project, I was to create a drawing created of one continuous line, along a stretch of paper equivalenting to 8 pieces of A4 paper in length and a height of half the size of A4 paper (or vice versa). The piece I created is a timeline of my most loved band, The Beatles, from where they began as The Quarrymen in 1957, all the way through their career together until their final performance on the roof of the Abbey Road Recording studios in 1969. I used a fine liner pen, graded 0.4 to create this simple image.

Cubism Collage Project
Juan Gris
Juan Gris is an artist, famously known for his analytical approaches within the Cubist art era. I prefer his cubism works over most, as I find the composition and colour palettes more appealing to the eye. I found the particular piece "Guitar and Fruit Bowl on a Table" a well-presented and structured piece. The piece itself, was what I used as inspiration for my collage piece, incorporating both a guitar and wooden table.

Using multiple medias, including both oil and chalk pastels, charcoal, pen and four types of paper, I created this collage of an acoustic guitar besides a wooden side board topped with flowers and skulls. I like the composition I used for this collage, along with the complimentary coloúrs. I found the newspaper and brown paper more tough to stick down than the others, but overall I am happy with the outcome.

The drawn image of the collage, I found to be a slight challenge due to trying to adhere to the textures of the papers, especially The Beatles print wrapping paper and the detail endured in the newspaper.
Final Project
For my Final Project, I was to create drawings and sketches incorporating my Studio and Show project. For my Studio and Show project, I have focused on the treatment of those working in the sex industry, specifically erotic dancers. I have created a series of images focusing on the body form using a range of materials.
Sarah Lucas
Sarah Lucas is a contemporary artist, notably known for being part of a group of British artist from the 1990's dubbed as Young British Artists (YBA). Her works that have been a particular influence to me are her pieces circulating on feminism and sexual oppression. The piece Pauline Bunny, 1997, is one that I admire, it has a strong representation of female subjugation as objects from the positioning of the garments used; and the limpness and floppiness of the way the piece is hung suggests submissiveness - something which reinforces the way women are seen as objects. Lucas has challenged the stereotypes of gender in this piece, something which I am strongly supportive of challenging.

Within my drawings, I tried experimenting with drawing techniques and mediums. All images were created on A3 and A4 paper.
