Sculpture

For my first year sculpture project, I created a life form from clay, which was then plastered, filled and then chiseled out to show my final product.

I love working with clay and found the process fun and straightforward.

I decided to create a torso of a female figure form. Using tools in the workshop, I worked calmly and with a quick hand motion to create rough lines and markings within the clay. Creating the shape of the body was fairly easy, however giving it a more realistic look took more

patience and thought. Initially the bust was a lot higher up and more 'perfect' to seem to be the model of a normal womanly shape. I found once the bust was dropped and more pear-shaped, the sculpture looked more appealing to the eye. My only dissatisfaction with the end product was that the shoulder blades were a bit too thick and bumpy.

I loved creating this piece, however I did find when chiseling the plaster out of the cast to be fairly stressful, as it was my first attempt at doing anything like this and I was dubious about potentially chiseling too far and damaging my work. I did have a small amount of trouble cracking the cast in the correct technique and found myself scarping the plaster quite frequently, making it more difficult to extract my sculpture. With perseverance, I managed to successfully get my sculpture from the cast with minimal damage to it, only one or two small chippings in the chest area.
